Cumulative global sales have passed a million electric vehicles in 2016, led by US and China. An estimated 570,000 electric vehicles were sold in 2016 in Europe.
In India, electric cars have existed as a niche product, with the Reva driving around for over a decade. The Reva is now part of the Mahindra stable as the ‘e2o’. Mahindra also has a sedan variant on offer and an SUV variant in the pipeline.
Tesla Motors too is looking to enter the Indian market, with plans to set up a battery plant. The Tesla Model 3 could be expected on Indian roads in a couple of years.
Potential issues that could slow down the spread of electric cars in India are price point, maximum range and the lack of charging infrastructure.
